💸 Facebook launches digital wallet Novi

Urged to be discontinued by Senate

Hey Waivly Crew! 🌊 Facebook has launched its pilot for Novi, its digital wallet, over two years after it got first announced. Instagram is introducing new features coming in the upcoming weeks, including collabs, fundraiser prompts, and more.

Instagram introduces new features

Instagram announced earlier today a new range of features will roll out this week, including an easier way to start fundraisers, a new way to collab with others, and two new effects.

Raise money for fundraisers

Tomorrow the platform is testing a new way to make fundraisers easier. With the feature, users can start a fundraiser from the “+” create button used to post in the top right corner, where you can then select a non-profit, overall making the process a lot quicker.

Collab with others

Instagram is also testing a tool called Collabs this week that will allow users to invite other users to collaborate on a post or short video on Reels. When two users collab, the post or Reel will appear on both profiles, but it will have a shared view count, like count and comment thread, Instagram says.

Two effects added

On Thursday, Instagram will introduce two new effects called Superbeat and Dynamic Lyrics. Superbeat intelligently applies special effects to user’s songs and Dynamic Lyrics will display 3D lyrics that moves with the song’s beat.

Zoox to test autonomous vehicles in Seattle

The autonomous vehicle company owned by Amazon, Zoox, will start to test its vehicles on the streets of Seattle.

New beginning

Zoox has been testing its autonomous vehicles in San Francisco and Las Vegas for years, but to be able to train its technology, even more, it has to hold trails in locations with different weather conditions, like rainy Seattle.

Drive in the rain

Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer at Zoox, Jesse Levinson, told Bloomberg there were two reasons for Zoox choosing Seattle to test its vehicles. The main reason was so they could see how water impacts the vehicle's sensors. The other reason was to hire local engineering talent in the city.

Even more Seattle plans

Zoox is also planning to open an engineering office and operations facility in Seattle for its autonomous vehicle testing at some point in 2022. According to Levinson, the number of employees in Seattle was not disclosed, but the company currently has more than 1,300 employees and aims to create over 450 more jobs this year.

Tech Special

Facebook launches Novi digital wallet

Facebook is starting to launch its digital wallet named Novi to a limited number of people in the US and Guatemala.

Help from Remitly

The digital wallet enables users to send and receive money using the Pax Dollar (USDP) stablecoin, securely and instantly, without any fees. Digital financial services platform Remitly announced yesterday that it is collaborating with Novi to help open new channels of financial access and inclusion.

Only the beginning

For now, it is only available as a pilot for a selected group of people in Guatemala and the US, apart from New York, Alaska, Nevada, and the Virgin Islands. During the pilot, Facebook will test that its customer response, compliance, and core features are functioning as they should.

Senate is not happy

In a letter from US Senators, Sens. Brian Schatz (D-HI), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), and others commented, “Facebook is once again pursuing digital currency plans on an aggressive timeline and has already launched a pilot for a payments infrastructure network, even though these plans are incompatible with the actual financial regulatory landscape — not only for Diem specifically, but also for stablecoins in general.”

Riot’s upcoming League of Legends series Arcane will be Netflix’s first show to premiere with co-streaming permissions on Twitch.

First time

The first episode of Arcane, the League of Legends animated series from Riot Games, which is debuting on Netflix next month, will be co-streamable exclusively on Twitch after both companies announced it on Twitter.

Not long to go

Arcane premieres on Netflix globally on Saturday, November 6th at 3 AM BST (10 PM ET) and will feature a “Global Premiere Event” that will allow any streamer to watch the episode live with their viewers. Riot will also hold a red carpet pre-show from Riot Games headquarters in Los Angeles.

For the community

“Interest in deeper storytelling from our global player base played a big part in our decision to make Arcane, so it’s only right that they will be able to watch the first episode of Arcane together as a community,” Brandon Miao, cross-product experiences and partnerships lead at Riot Games, said in a statement.
