AI-Generated Drake and The Weeknd song submitted to the Grammys
Recording Academy CEO's says “it’s absolutely eligible"
An artificial intelligence-generated song, which mimics the vocals of Drake and The Weeknd with terrifying accuracy, has been submitted for Grammy consideration.
Created by the anonymous producer Ghostwriter, “Heart on My Sleeve” went viral in April. At the time, it left listeners in disbelief over its resemblance to the real artists, who had nothing to do with its creation.
Now, the track has been submitted to the Recording Academy — the organization behind the Grammys — for nomination in the Best Rap Song and Song of the Year categories, a representative told the New York Times.
In both categories, the award is attributed to the songwriter, who was also confirmed by the Ghostwriter representative to be a human.
Earlier this year, the Recording Academy announced that artists could use AI in their songs and submit them for consideration for an award, as long as there is a “meaningful” human authorship component in the work.
The CEO of the Recording Academy, Harvey Mason Jr., confirmed this, saying music with AI elements is “absolutely eligible” for Grammy consideration. He reiterated that to the Times regarding Ghostwriter's track, saying:
“As far as the creative side, it’s absolutely eligible because it was written by a human.”
However, “Heart on My Sleeve” still has to meet “general distribution” standards that require nationwide availability in physical stores, online retailers, and/or streaming services, something a song that faces copyright issues might struggle with.
