JPMorgan explores blockchain-based payment and settlement system
U.S. banking giant JPMorgan Chase & Co. is exploring a blockchain-based digital payment and settlement system, according to a Thursday report by Bloomberg.
JPMorgan has developed most of the infrastructure for the project, which requires a digital deposit token, but can't move ahead with the system before obtaining approval from U.S. regulators, Bloomberg reported, citing a person familiar with the matter.
After receiving a go-ahead, the bank could launch the project for corporate clients within a year.
The proposed system could accelerate transaction speeds while lowering costs, with the deposit token representing a digital version of a customer's deposits. It could be used to send money to clients of another bank or settle tokenized securities.
“Deposit tokens bring plenty of potential benefits, but we also appreciate that regulators would want to be thoughtful and diligent before any new product gets developed and used,” a JPMorgan spokesperson said in a statement. “Should that appetite develop, our blockchain infrastructure would be able to support the launch of deposit tokens relatively quickly.”
JPMorgan has voiced its support for deposit tokens before. In February, the bank noted that deposit tokens may offer more stability and reliability than similar solutions, such as stablecoins and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs).

California's Gavin Newsom signs new executive order on AI risks
California Governor Gavin Newsom signed Wednesday an executive order to study the development, use, and risks of generative artificial intelligence.
Under the order, state agencies are tasked with identifying “the most significant and beneficial uses of GenAI in the state” and developing frameworks to train state employees on how to use “state-approved” generative AI tools.
The agencies will also analyze potential negative impacts of the technology, including its effect on vulnerable communities and threats to “critical energy infrastructure” in California.
“This is a potentially transformative technology – comparable to the advent of the internet – and we’re only scratching the surface of understanding what GenAI is capable of,” Newsom said in a statement.“We recognize both the potential benefits and risks these tools enable.”
The California order comes after President Joe Biden discussed the future of AI technology with Newsom and a collective of tech leaders from the Silicon Valley during his visit to the Bay Area in June.
Anthropic launches Claude Pro to rival ChatGPT's AI chatbot
Anthropic, the AI startup co-founded by ex-OpenAI employees, has launched a paid version of its Claude chatbot in the U.S. and U.K.
Priced at $20 (or £18) per month, Claude Pro offers users “5x more usage” than the free Claude 2 tier provides, the ability to send “many more” messages, priority access to Claude during high-traffic periods, and early access to new features.
“Since launching in July, users tell us they’ve chosen Claude as their day-to-day AI assistant for its longer context windows, faster outputs, complex reasoning capabilities and more,” Anthropic wrote in a blog post. “Many also shared that they would value more file uploads and conversations over longer periods…With Claude Pro, subscribers can now gain 5x more usage of our latest model.”
Anthropic says users will get at least 100 messages every eight hours, depending on Claude’s capacity. The company says it'll warn you when you have ten messages remaining, with its limits resetting every eight hours.
The new offering puts Anthropic on track to compete with OpenAI’s $20 per month ChatGPT Plus plan. Poe, Quora's hub for AI chatbots, also offers a $20 per month paid plan, and Microsoft recently launched an enterprise version of Bing Chat with commercial data protection.
