Bored Ape Yacht Club creator Yuga Labs is investigating a phishing attack after a hacker accessed the official Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) Instagram account.
⠀
On Monday at 10 AM EST, the project first warned its community of the scam. "There is no mint going on today. It looks like BAYC's Instagram was hacked. Do not mint anything, click links, or link your wallet to anything," tweeted Bored Ape Yacht Club.
⠀
Once the hacker gained access to the NFT project’s Instagram account, they updated its bio with a fake mint link claiming anyone who connected their wallets to the website could claim a LAND airdrop. This was taking advantage of BAYC’s upcoming metaverse, the Otherside, which will offer virtual land.
⠀
When users clicked on the phishing link and connected their wallets, they, unfortunately, lost all of their NFTs within seconds.
⠀
The hacker got away with over 91 NFTs, including 24 Bored Apes, 30 Mutant Apes, and three Kennel Club NFTs before Yuga Labs managed to delete the link. These NFTs were worth at least $2.8 million, according to data from Zerion.
⠀
It’s still unclear how the hacker accessed BAYC’s Instagram account. However, anyone who was affected by the hack or has new information that might be helpful to Yuga Labs can now reach out to “ighack@yugalabs.io”
