Hey Waivly Crew! 🌊 Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp suffered outages yesterday, which lasted most of the day. Jeff Bezos's space travel company, Blue Origin, announced that Star Trek actor William Shatner is going to fly to space.
Facebook and Instagram went down yesterday
Yesterday Facebook went down, along with Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Oculus VR, and everyone is confused about how it happened.
Why did they down?
If you were not able to access Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, or Messenger, it wasn't just you. From around 4:38 PM BST, Downdetector started to record a spike in outage reports across all Facebook-owned platforms. The reason for the outages is due to the DNS records that tell systems how to find Facebook and Instagram were wiped from the internet across all root servers.
Took a while
After six hours since the servers went down, Facebook, Instagram, and the rest of its companies came back online. For taking so long to resolve the outage, Facebook apologized on Twitter, saying, "To the huge community of people and businesses around the world who depend on us: we're sorry. We’ve been working hard to restore access to our apps and services and are happy to report they are coming back online now. Thank you for bearing with us."
