NASA discovers 'Super-Earth' 137 light-years away
A NASA telescope recently identified a captivating super-Earth within a distant solar system, located 137 light-years away. Named TOI-715 b, this rocky exoplanet is 1.5 times the size of Earth and orbits within the habitable zone, making it a potential candidate for life.
Despite its close proximity to its star, a "red dwarf," scientists believe TOI-715 b may not be an inhospitable, scorching world due to the cooler nature of red dwarfs compared to our sun. The research, featured in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, relied on the periodic passing of TOI-715 b in front of its star, visualized by NASA as a distant dark dot.
Learn Blockchain with us in 5 days: Lesson 2
At the heart of blockchain lie digital containers called "blocks." Each block holds a specific amount of transaction data, like who sent what amount of cryptocurrency to whom. These blocks aren't just randomly stacked; they're chronologically linked together, forming a chain that stretches back to the very first block ever created.

Google's €25M AI skill boost for Europe unveiled
Google is set to launch a 25 million euros ($26.9 million) support fund for AI skill training in Europe, aiming to empower individuals to leverage AI opportunities as the continent emerges as a leader in AI for economic growth.
The AI Opportunity Initiative collaborates with EU governments, academia, businesses, and civil society to offer advanced AI training, particularly prioritizing vulnerable communities and local startups. Approximately 10 million euros will be dedicated to empowering workers with the necessary skills to navigate the changing landscape.
This initiative follows the successful 2015 "Grow with Google" program, which provided free training to over 12 million people, and includes a partnership with the Centre for Public Impact to extend AI training to EU-based social enterprises and nonprofits.

Sony buys 50% of Michael Jackson's catalog for $600M
In what is likely the largest transaction for a solo musician’s body of work, Sony has acquired 50% of Michael Jackson's publishing and recorded masters for over $1.2 billion.
Billboard estimates Sony's payment at a minimum of $600 million. Last February, negotiations indicated Jackson's estate sought $800 million-$900 million for half of the singer’s music catalog, including master recordings, publishing rights, and royalties from theatrical shows.
This deal builds upon the 2016 transaction where Sony bought out Jackson's half of Sony/ATV Music Publishing for $750 million. Jackson's involvement in music publishing began in 1985 when he acquired ATV Music Publishing, the majority owner of the Beatles' music rights, for $41.5 million, later merging his stake with Sony Music to form Sony/ATV eleven years later.
iOS 17.4 beta lets users generate virtual card numbers
The iOS 17.4 beta lets iPhone users generate a virtual card number for Apple Cash, as reported by 9to5Mac, citing user reports on Reddit in recent weeks.
This feature enables users to make Apple Cash payments even when Apple Pay is unavailable, addressing a key limitation of the service. To check for the feature, users can open the Wallet app, tap their Apple Cash card, and follow a two-step process to set up the virtual card number.
The generated card information, including an expiration date and security code, simplifies transactions, especially in locations where Apple Pay is not widely supported. Notably, Apple Cash maintains a separate card number for Apple Pay transactions, accessible through the "Additional Card Numbers" menu, providing added flexibility for users.
Google One reaches 100 million subscribers
Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced Friday that his company has logged 100 million subscriptions to Google One, its all-in-one subscription service.
This impressive milestone underscores Google's strategic effort to encourage users to move away from free plans, as demonstrated by the recent termination of unlimited Google Drive storage for photos. Notably, Google One achieved the 100 million subscriber mark more rapidly than YouTube Premium, which took nine years to reach the same milestone.
The announcement coincided with Google's fourth-quarter earnings report, where it hinted at nearing the 100 million mark and emphasized the company's dedication to this trajectory. Even with recent layoffs and the introduction of the pricier AI Premium Plan, Google remains steadfast in steering users toward subscription-based models.
