Google rolls out new badge label feature for Chrome extensions
To help users avoid unsafe extensions
Google announced that they are rolling a new badge label feature to help Chrome users avoid bad Chrome extensions.
⠀
The badge feature will help users install useful extensions without looking over where the Chrome extension comes from.
⠀
One of the badges is called Featured, which looks like a ribbon. It will be displayed on Chrome extensions that meet Google’s technical best practices as well as meet the high standards of user experience and design. The addition of the badges is a manual process that involves Google to evaluate the extension for an enjoyable and intuitive user experience and make sure extension developers are using the latest APIs.
⠀
It will also enable Google to keep an eye on each Chrome extension’s privacy practices and requested permissions. In order for extension developers to have these badges on their extensions, they must have a detailed store page that outlines the purpose and functions of the extension and must also be accessible without any credentials or payments. The other badge that is being shown on extension is the “made by Established Publisher,” which will be shown as a checkmark.
⠀
To get the checkmark badge, extension publishers will have to have verified their identities, in addition to demonstrating their compliance with Google’s developer program policies. The publishers will also need to have a consistent track record with their extension services and not have any developer violations. These new badges, according to Google’s Debbie Kim, will help people feel better about installing an extension without worrying that it is malicious.
