Google has recently announced that it will be shutting down Google Hangouts and will shift to Google Chat. The migration process of Google Hangout users to Google Chat began back in February when the company first announced that its Google Hangout platform will be replaced with Google Chat.
For Google Hangout, users who use the mobile app will be prompted to switch over to Google Chat when they access the app. Users that access Hangout through Gmail via desktop will still be able to access the platform until November.
Users will be warned at least a month prior to the company beginning to direct the Google Hangout site onto the Google Chat site. The company has stated that it won’t begin prompting desktop users to shift to Google Chat until July.
For those who are wondering what will happen to user conversations on Google Hangout when it shutdowns, Google will automatically transfer users’ conversations on Google Hangout onto Google Chat. Users will also be given the option to use Google’s Takeout service, which is a feature that allows users to download a copy of their Google Hangout data.
