$1.7M in NFTs stolen in OpenSea phishing attack

OpenSea admits NFT insider's trading incident | Financial Times

On Saturday night, OpenSea shared that it was investigating a phishing scam targeting users on its platform, quickly causing fear amongst the community.

ㅤㅤ

"We are actively investigating rumors of an exploit associated with OpenSea related smart contract. This appears to be a phishing attack originating outside of OpenSea's website. Do not click links outside of opensea.io." OpenSea shared on Twitter.

ㅤㅤ

According to a spreadsheet compiled by the blockchain security service PeckShield, 32 users were targeted between 5 PM and 8 PM EST, resulting in 254 NFTs being stolen.

ㅤㅤ

While it might seem like these numbers wouldn’t make a big impact on the marketplace, the attackers stole primarily high-value NFTs from collections such as Bored Ape Yacht Club, Decentraland, Doodles, Azuki, and many others, valued at an estimated total of $1.7 million.

ㅤㅤㅤ

OpenSea CEO Devin Finzer on Twitter described that the phishing attack targeted signed partial contracts that had general authorization but had large portions of the contract left blank. Finzer continued by explaining that with signatures in place, the attackers were able to complete the contract with just a call to their own contracts, transferring the ownership of the NFTs without any payments.

Universal Music partners with Curio to launch NFT projects

Universal Music Group (UMG) has partnered with Curio, a premium NFT platform for entertainment brands and music artists.

ㅤㅤ

As part of the deal, Curio will work closely with UMG to help develop NFT projects from its record labels, artists, and operating companies and will be UMG’s “dedicated global outlet” for future officially licensed projects.

ㅤㅤ

UMG has a wide range of artists from all over the world, including Taylor Swift, BTS, Billie Elish, Sting, Lil Wayne, Rihanna, Adele, Jay-Z, Coldplay, and many others, so it will be exciting to see who decides to launch their own NFT projects in the future.

ㅤㅤ

UMG and Curio are already working together on the first projects, the first of which is scheduled to drop in March from Capitol Music Group artist Calum Scott, a well-known British singer, and songwriter.

ㅤㅤ

This isn’t the first time UMG has taken interest in NFTs and Web3, as in December, the firm partnered with Genies to develop avatars and digital wearables for its artist roster to prepare for the metaverse.

ㅤㅤ

“UMG and our labels are focused on developing NFT projects that authentically engage and speak to our artists’ fanbases and new audiences,” UMG executive Michael Nash said in a statement. “With Curio, our labels will have a secure and dedicated platform to host these premium projects and provide new opportunities for collectors and fans from around the world to acquire unique pieces, inspired by their favorite artists and labels,” he added.
