Sony's acquisition of Bungie is complete
For about $3.7 billion
Sony has finally completed the acquisition of the company behind Destiny 2, Bungie. The acquisition deal initially was worth around $3.6 billion when it was first announced back in January. In a recent SEC filing, the acquisition of Bungie is now worth about $3.7 billion.
Now that the acquisition is finalized what are Sony’s plans for Bungie? Well, Sony is planning to lean on Bungie for their “world-class expertise in multi-platform development as well as live game services.” This means that under Sony, Bungie will assist them in the expansion of PlayStation to more gamers through the live game services that they would provide. Sony views that live game services are a big part of the future of PlayStation since they are planning to release more than 10 live service games by March 2026.
Despite now being under Sony, Bungie CEO Pete Parsons has stated in a blog post that the development company will be able to continue to independently publish, as well as creatively develop their games. Future games that Bungie is developing are said to not be PlayStation exclusives, so gamers that use different gaming consoles will have access to future games when they release.
