Starbucks taps Polygon for new Web3 experience
Will allow members to earn and buy NFT stamps
Named Starbucks Odyssey, the experience will offer Starbucks Rewards members and Starbucks partners (employees) in the U.S. the opportunity to earn and purchase digital collectible assets that unlock access to new benefits and immersive coffee experiences.
To engage with the Starbucks Odyssey experience, members will need to log into the web app using their Starbucks Rewards login credentials.
Once there, they’ll be able to engage in various activities, which Starbucks called “journeys,” such as playing interactive games or taking on fun challenges to deepen their knowledge of coffee and Starbucks. Members will be rewarded for completing journeys with a digital collectable ‘journey stamp’ (NFT).
Additionally, a set of limited-edition NFTs will be available to purchase with credit cards—cryptocurrency won’t be required to “claim an ownership stake in their loyalty to Starbucks,” as the company describes.
Starbucks explored multiple blockchains for the experience, but landed on the proof-of-stake blockchain technology built by Polygon because it uses less energy than Layer 1 proof-of-work blockchains.
“Building Starbucks Odyssey using technology that aligns with our sustainability aspirations and commitments is a top priority,” said Ryan Butz, the vice president of loyalty, strategy, and marketing for Starbucks. “We took a very thoughtful and thorough approach when evaluating which blockchain to utilize, and Polygon’s fast, low-cost, and carbon-neutral network is the perfect foundation for our first digital community.”
Starbucks customers and employees can now join the waitlist to get an exclusive invitation to the Starbucks Odyssey experience, expected to launch later this year.
