American film director Steven Soderberg has partnered with nonprofit organization Decentralized Pictures to launch a $300,000 grant on the platform.

According to IndieWire, yesterday, Soderbergh’s production company Extension 765 launched a $300,000 grant available on DCP’s platform called “The Andrews/Bernard Award”. The grant will support multiple filmmakers with funds for English-language fiction features or shorts without having to pitch to a studio.

“As with a lot of things I’ve done, it’s kind of an experiment,” Soderbergh said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “Part of my interest in this was to really get under the hood of how this is supposed to work to see if it really does work. Because for me, it’s still an open question, only because anything that was invented by a human being is probably at some point going to have the flaws that a human being has. I really want to get up in the grill of this blockchain approach or structure to see if it’s going to do what it’s supposed to do.”
⠀
If you’re not familiar with Soderbergh’s past work, he was the director behind the iconic “Ocean’s” franchise, as well as “Magic Mike" and the Oscar-winning "Erin Brockovich." In 2017, Soderbergh funded his film “Logan Lucky” by himself and through foreign presales. This was when realized directors should be able to create movies without the help of traditional Hollywood studios.
