Twitter tests new verified phone number label
To help users identify real accounts
Many Twitter users struggle to identify legitimate accounts, so they have been calling for changes on how the social media platform identifies accounts. This led Twitter to start testing a new label displayed on profiles.
The new Twitter label that the company is currently testing out is a verified phone number label, as noted by Jane Manchun Wong, an engineer. Wong also noted that the company is testing a new feature that will show the view counts of a tweet. Some Twitter users already have access to the viewer count feature under their analytics. It is unclear whether the feature would be visible to only the author of the tweet or if it is visible to everyone.
Twitter already requires verified accounts to have a verified phone number or a verified email address to get the blue check mark on their account. By adding a new label to accounts, such as the verified phone number, users will be able to differentiate between bot accounts and legitimate Twitter accounts.
